Letter from a current resident

I arrived at Laurel House on December 26 without knowing what to expect or how the program would impact me. During my first few months of living here, I was full of anger, indifference, resentment, and a desire to isolate myself from the world. I was disrespectful, stubborn, and intolerant. Donna was patient but firm and strove to try to become close to me while maintaining her disciplinarian role.

Laurel House gave me the opportunity to have a reliable place of residence and one school to go to consistently. The uncertainty that had previously governed my life was lifted, and without it I felt a great relief that had a calming effect. I no longer had to worry about whether or not I would be moving the next day or with whom I would have an argument.

Not only have I recovered from some of the things I was going through, but I also adopted a new way of life that inspires me to be a better person. Donna provided me with all the resources I needed as well as an abundant amount of guidance, and asked of me only to make an effort to change. Without Donna’s help and the consistent environment Laurel House provided, I would never have made such an amazing transformation over the course of the past year.

Throughout my stay at Laurel House, I have become a Christian and learned a lot about myself. I have gained forgiveness and reconciliation with my mom. Donna has counseled me through all of my problems and created a way for me to have a greater understanding for my situation at all times. She is constant in being there for me, despite whatever mistakes I may make, and always made sure I had whatever I needed. Donna led by example and gave me knowledge of how Christians lead their lives. She eliminated any false perceptions of religion I may have harbored prior to coming to Laurel House that may have prevented me from pursuing it. She answered and continues to answer my questions about faith, and encourages me to turn to God. Without the influence of Donna and all those involved in Laurel House, I would not be able to reach the point at which I stand in my beliefs today.

I first came to Laurel House about three years ago. I was twelve going on thirteen, and I thought I knew everything there was to know about life. I had many issues that needed to be worked on in counseling. I also had many problems with my parents. I worked out a lot of problems with my family and felt I had grown as a person by the time I graduated from the program.
