Why We're Here
At any one time there are many teenagers in need of crisis shelter because of volatile family situations. Since these teens are not being served by any public agency (probation, child protective services, etc.), the only recourse for law enforcement, schools or other agencies is to place them in Orangewood Home for Dependent Children. This takes the teen away from school, sports, jobs and other activities and places them in a living situation with young people who have more severe problems. For these reasons, many young people choose to live in cars or disreputable motels, when they are unable to continue living at home, rather than seek help from county or public agencies. Laurel House was founded to combat these problems.

I first came to Laurel House about three years ago. I was twelve going on thirteen, and I thought I knew everything there was to know about life. I had many issues that needed to be worked on in counseling. I also had many problems with my parents. I worked out a lot of problems with my family and felt I had grown as a person by the time I graduated from the program. -- Former Resident
