Welcome to LAUREL HOUSE Providing a Home for Teens in Crisis for 30 Years

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

“Dear Donna & Steve, Thank you for the strength and love that you have given me. You have encouraged me! It’s been an amazing eight months living at Laurel House. You helped me get my life back on track. I came here with all “F’s”; stealing and lying was part of everyday life. I wasn’t taking hotice of how my actions were hurting not only me but my family, my future and my education. You gave me consequences when I needed them, listened to me when I needed someone to talk to and you even gave me something I always wanted– a supporting family. I thank the Lord for you and everything you have done for me. You have been a huge part of my life and I will never forget you. Thanks for having me here and for the program you help run– it is an amazing one and I love you!”

When a friend read this testimonial from a former teen, he just had to respond! This young girl’s words resonnated with him. He shared his understanding of the impact of Laurel House with us.

“As I have grown and become a father to teens, I have seen in both my children and their friends how crucial a stable family is for the growth and development of the heart, soul, mind, and self-esteem of young people. I am convinced that much of the trouble and negativity we see rampant among adolescents today can be traced back to their perception of family issues that they experience such as divorce, abuse, neglect, etc. Please understand that I am not blaming all of the hardships of the teen years on the family. But I do think that there is a severe lack of responsible, caring role models in the lives of many teens, and this can lead to those teens growing up with misconceptions of what it means to be a family, what is means to really love others, what it means to be in a real relationship. Which is a bad way to start off the rest of one’s life. And so I am committed to doing what I can personally to champion those causes that try to provide role models and/or repair such misconceptions.

Laurel House, Inc. is an organization that does just that. They take in teen girls that come from a whole range of histories, all of whom have been broken or scarred by their past, and provide room, board, and a chance for a brighter future for them. But beyond just shelter, Laurel House also provides counseling to the girls so that they can identify, confront, and overcome the issues that have led them to this place. Family counseling provides reconciliation and guidance so that as the girls heal their family can be brought back together. The girls change schools and refocus on education, to provide a base for their future. The house parents, a family who lives onsite, provide leadership and mentoring to demonstrate to the girls how a strong family can support and encourage without breaking down the individual. I truly believe that Laurel House, understands and is in the act of contributing to a better tomorrow for our youth and our community as a whole.

I was honored that Eric gave me permission to share this with all of you. I just like to pass this along and give credit where credit is rightfully due.
